Shipped-in feeder pigs will often suffer from scours and/or respiratory problems.

To aid in prevention and control of these problems, the following program for feeder pigs is recommended:

• Buy only good quality, healthy, single source feeder pigs.
• Isolate newly arrived feeder pigs from other pigs. Place the pigs in a draft-free area with a clean, dry floor.
• Provide four to five square feet of floor space per pig.
  Allow themplenty of rest.
• Consult your local veterinarian for a specific medication, vaccination, and disease prevention program.
• Water soluble and/or injectable medication should be considered for severely stressed animals.
• Treat for lice and mange when necessary.
• Sort pigs for size. Range in weight of pigs in the same pen should not exceed 10% above or below the average.
• Provide clean, fresh water at all times (one automatic watering outlet per 15-20 pigs).
• Provide one self-feeder hole per four pigs.
• Deworm pigs within 7-10 days of arrival. Repeat at 21-28 days if worm infestation is severe.
